Now enjoy an excerpt:

After dinner, Jack suggested they sit out on the patio to watch the stars. Mrs. Poole went into the kitchen to clean up while Aunt Mabry, Jack, and Kelly went outside with a bottle of wine and three glasses.

Aunt Mabry and Jack sat down in Adirondack chairs on the patio while Kelly poured the wine and lit the three squat candles sitting on a low glass table between the chairs. Jack took his glass from Kelly, looped an arm around her waist and pulled her down onto his lap.

He felt her tense briefly, but then she relaxed into him and he grinned. He knew he was getting to her as much as she was getting to him. Jack worried for a minute that it might be cruel to tease her as much as he did, but he quickly dismissed the thought. It was fun and he loved making her blush and squirm. Reluctance from a woman wasn’t something he was used to, but damn, it was like an aphrodisiac.

Jack kept his arms around Kelly’s waist and his hands rested on her tummy, but as they drank their wine and made idle conversation with his aunt, he found one hand moving just high enough on her stomach to let him brush his thumb back and forth on the lower curve of her incredible, full breast. He meant to do it to torment Kelly, but it backfired on him as he found himself burning with heat for her.

Jack took his other hand and brushed the hair back from her neck, pushing it to one side as he leaned over her shoulder to speak so that his words caused his breath to brush against her soft skin. He barely got a word out when Kelly sprang from his lap.

“I, uh, I’m going to go for a run. Forgot to do my workout today,” she said, pulling the excuse out of thin air. In fact, Jack was fairly sure she hadn’t gone for a run the whole time she’d lived there so far.

“I’ll, um, I’ll see you guys later,” she said as he grinned at her and stifled a laugh.

Aunt Mabry shook her head as she watched Kelly walk away.

“She’s an odd one, Jack,” Mabry said.

Jack grinned. “One of a kind Aunt Mabry. One of a kind.”

@GoddessFish Book Review Tour - Special Interests by Emma Barry @AuthorEmmaBarry

The Deets...

Compared to love, politics is easy

Union organizer Millie Frank’s world isn’t filled with cocktails and nightclubs…until she’s turned into an unwitting minor celebrity. As if being part of a hostage situation wasn’t traumatizing enough, now her face is splashed across the news. But Millie’s got fresher wounds to nurse—like being shot down by the arrogant bad boy she stupidly hit on.

Parker Beckett will do whatever it takes to close a deal for the senate majority leader, including selling out union labor. Charming and smart on the surface, he’s also cynical and uncommitted—an asset on the Hill. But something about Millie has stuck with him and when negotiations bring her to his office, Parker breaks his own rules and asks her out.

Parker can’t understand how Millie has retained her idealism in a place like D.C. Millie can’t believe what Parker’s willing to sacrifice in order to pass a budget. But as they navigate their political differences, what grows between them looks a lot like a relationship…and maybe even a little like love.

My Thoughts...

Firstly, I hate politics! It makes me angry, I can't even watch those political debate programs because I end up shouting at the TV. What interested me in this story was the fact that so many love stories that have come before it have avoided the political arena as much as I do (or maybe I just don't see them).

So ... we have two idealistic characters meeting, falling in love and setting out on a journey towards happily ever after, but love is never that simple. Despite the setting, I was pleasantly surprised to not be overwhelmed with the politics, and as a Brit I learned a thing or two about US politics. I loved the tussle between Millie and Parker and the way these two characters seek out to change the way people think about them. Millie as more than the celebrity she's occidentally found herself to be, and Parker no longer wants to be seen as the cynical guy with no interest in love.

For anyone trying to escape from uni work (like me) or any other real world problems, this book is the perfect "getting away" for a little while.

Thank you Emma Barry.

Sneak Peek Inside...

The best part about having one of the most identifiable faces in the country, at least for the moment, was that you didn’t wait to put in an order. Millie Frank couldn’t remember when she’d had a bartender respond more quickly. Or when she’d received more smiles from strangers.

She straightened her dress in the mirror over the bar and fluffed her brown hair. She looked…fine. Her ensemble had Alyse’s stamp of approval, as did the smoky eye makeup, and what else was there, really? Looking or feeling like herself, perhaps, which she hadn’t in a week. Whatever herself even meant anymore.

She shoved a generous tip into the jar and turned on her heel, right into a be-pin-striped chest.

“Sorry!” She stepped back quickly, then clutched her glass with both hands, impressed she’d avoided spilling.

The guy she’d bumped into towered over her. She glanced up at him and half-grimaced, half-smiled in apology. It was an honest reaction, but good God, did it help cover her astonishment. He bore more than surpassing resemblance to the underwear model she had absolutely not been ogling in the window of H&M that afternoon. Except for the suit, of course. She assumed the suit covered a body as lovely as what was revealed: wavy brown hair, devastating dark eyes and absolutely perfect teeth.

He smiled and her knees buckled. He had to know the effect that might have on women and yet he did it anyway. Without warning, even. The jerk.

The tastefully appointed den was quiet, save the sounds of the antique clock ticking on the mantel and the occasional popping of the logs that burned sedately in the fireplace. The room’s two occupants were holding an entire conversation with their eyes, as the woman seated behind the ornate mahogany desk turned an envelope corner to corner to corner. The socially polite smile she usually wore was absent, a cold harshness in its place that would have surprised most who knew her.
That harshness was no surprise to the man seated in the comfortable leather chair in front of the desk. Trey London shifted, moving so that he could set the cut-glass tumbler he held on a strategically placed coaster on the table beside him.
“How do you want to handle this?” he finally asked. His voice was quiet, even though they were alone in the big house and being overheard wasn’t a concern. Most things he did, he did quietly. People found his calm demeanor reassuring for the most part, with only a handful seeing that predatory watchfulness for what it truly was.
She sat forward, stunningly elegant even though she was attired in a simple blouse and skirt. Her fingers ran across the top of the envelope where she’d slit it with the pearl-handled letter opener earlier that day. “The same way we handled all Hatcher’s other little… indiscretions. Quickly and without blinking. Making those go away was fairly simple, and I see no reason this has to be different. You’ll take care of it?”
He nodded. “Of course. You know this will have to be dealt with in a more severe fashion than the rest. We can’t pay him off or scare him off.”
An arched eyebrow lifted as she gave a little shake of her head. “I’m aware. And I don’t care. He’s not worth my concern. Do you have a problem doing it?”
“You know I don’t. I’ve not spent the last fifteen years protecting your interests only to balk now. When?”
“Soon. The sooner, the better.” She lifted her own glass and took a sip of the amber liquid it contained. In the firelight and the warm glow of the Tiffany lamp perched on the edge of her desk, he saw her lips lift into a tiny smirk. “I worked too hard to get where I am to let someone traipse in and take it all from me with this kind of drivel. Hatcher and I never saw eye-to-eye about how these matters should be handled. Apparently, he’s been paying through the nose to keep this quiet. Well, this bitch doesn’t pay.”
That was the God’s honest truth, he knew. Oh, she compensated him well, very well, to act as clean-up man for whatever needed to be swept under the rug, but that was part of their understanding. He made problems go away; that was his job. And he was good at it. In the grand scheme of things, removing this newest problem wasn’t even the vilest act he’d ever performed to keep her safe. But it would be the first time he’d ever killed for her.
“I’ll see that it’s done.” He stood and straightened his sweater before leaving.
She stopped him as he reached the door.
“If you could make it look like an accident, that would probably be best. And we’ll need to find out what he has written down or stashed away, and make sure it disappears as well. Because you know he’ll have something. They always do.”
“Of course they do. I’ll take care of it. You know I will.”
“Why else would I keep you around?” Her eyes dropped to his crotch, and he shut the door of the den back with a quiet snick.
Watching her smile was like looking into the eyes of a shark, and despite the emptiness, he felt an odd sexual thrill run up his spine as she traced the edge of her glass with a blood-red fingernail.

“Why else, indeed?” He went to her, knowing better than to wait for her to come to him while she was in this sort of mood, and stood at the corner of her desk as he waited for instructions. His arousal grew as she slowly unbuttoned her shirt and stood, only to kneel before him. Of all the perks of his job, he thought, closing his eyes as her mouth found its way to him and started working skillfully, this was his favorite. The thrill of the danger of knowing she could have him killed, or that he’d be imprisoned for the rest of his life if the crimes he had committed on her behalf came to light, just added to his pleasure.
