Charmed I'm Sure by Lynda Simmons - Book Review & Giveaway

The Deets

Laugh Out Loud Funny...With Just a Touch of Magic

One minute Maxine Henley is the happy bride-to-be and the next she’s the girl who gets dumped over the phone. Max has never believed in magic and fairy’s tales, but if wearing a love charm can warm her fiancé’s cold feet, she’s happy to stuff that little wooden heart next to her own and wait. The charm came with a promise that the right man will find her, guaranteed, but how can that happen when her teenage crush Sam O’Neal keeps getting in the way!

Sneak Peek inside...

Sam scribbled the hamburger special on the board, carried his coffee through the front door and sat down on the step. He sent a nod across the road as the lights flicked on in Tracy’s beauty parlor. Raised his mug when Howard came out to change the pictures in the window of his real estate office, and lifted a hand to salute Jeff who was wheeling a third barbeque out to the front of his hardware store.

Over at Cy’s Deli, rumor was that Howard had his hair colored in Tracy’s back room. Some folks wondered what else went on back there, but Jeff swore everything was aboveboard, since Tracy was still carrying a torch for Stan over at the Kwik Way. Sam nodded at a passing pickup and the driver honked back. A typical Saturday morning in Schomberg, every face familiar, every name known. While it made privacy difficult and gossip a way of life, it also made it impossible to ignore the woman talking to herself in front of the post office. She wasn’t a crazy person and definitely wasn’t dangerous. She was just Molly, who had wandered off again to sit under the statue honoring Schomberg’s war heroes and read the names of her two sons, Albert and Walter. No one was surprised when Cy took her into the Deli for a coffee because everyone knew Molly’s family would be around to collect her soon enough, and she wasn’t hurting a soul.

Sam rose with his empty cup, still finding it odd that the very things that had driven him away years ago were the same things that had drawn him right back. He’d taken a risk in moving to Schomberg, gambling everything he had on a town that was still small and unsophisticated, and had only recently recognized its own charm. Subdivisions had sprouted in areas he’d last seen as farms and orchards, while outlet malls and shopping centers drew even the old-timers away from Schomberg’s main street. Yet there were people like him trying to breathe new life into the town with shops like the Looking Glass down the road and the Peanut Gallery near the highway. And of course there was the Tap Room, the most ambitious of all, with the most potential for disaster. Still, he couldn’t name a single regret or find any way to make Maxine Henley understand why.

She grew up in Toronto reading Greek mythology, bringing home stray cats and making up stories about bodies in the basement. From an early age, her family knew she would either end up as a writer or the old lady with a hundred cats. As luck would have it, she married a man with allergies so writing it was.

With two daughters to raise, Lynda and her husband moved into a lovely two storey mortgage in Burlington, a small city on the water just outside Toronto. While the girls are grown and gone, Lynda and her husband are still there. And yes, there is a cat – a beautiful, if spoiled, Birman. If you’d like to read the legend of Birman cats click here. When she’s not writing or teaching, Lynda gives serious thought to using the treadmill in her basement. Fortunately, she’s found that if she waits long enough, something urgent will pop up and save her - like a phone call or an e-mail or a whistling kettle. Or even that cat just looking for a little more attention!

@GoddessFish VBT - Classic Fairy Tales with Modern Heroines.Guest Post by Emelle Gamble: author of December Wedding.

Today here at Beyond My Writing Space we're talking fairy tales. I've been swept up in Frozen Fever ever since I saw the Let It Go teaser on Youtube long before the film was released at the cinema. So I asked Emelle Gamble, author of December Wedding, "Which fairytale would you most like to step into and why?" and I absolutely love her answer!

Cinderella is the ultimate fairy tale for me…
People who thwart your dreams and deny you what you deserve, a handsome prince who sees you from across the room and knows you are his one and only, and a good fairy to grant your fondest wish! And good clothes! What could be better?
However much I love this fairy tale, I’ve often thought that Cinderella is a bit old-fashioned. She does have to be rescued, and it takes a miracle to get what she wants. A friend is working on a more pro-active, futuristic version of this character, who relies more on hard work, courage and never giving up to win her Prince.
That’s probably what we modern readers want in a heroine, pluck and grit instead of glass slippers…but still, wouldn’t we all love having a fairy godmother for just one night?
Readers, if you did have one wish, what would it be? If it was me, a certain Mrs. George Clooney might find her hubby missing for the evening…

A December Wedding ... The Deets

Molly Harper is a movie star who fans think ‘has it all’. Cruz Morales is Molly’s true love, and he hates the media intrusions into their life. Molly and Cruz are going to have a baby. And throw a secret wedding for her brother Harry. What could go wrong? Read DECEMBER WEDDING, the sequel to DUETS and MOLLY HARPER, and find out if there really is a happy ever after for Molly and Cruz.

A Sneak Peek inside

Molly Harper lay beside Cruz Morales in the darkened bedroom, finally drowsy as the familiar night sounds floated in on the Santa Barbara breezes. She was on her second set of counting backwards from 100 to fall asleep, forty-two, forty-one…

“Will you marry me, Molly?” Cruz asked, his voice husky and close.

“No.” She’d said no to him a hundred times the last year. He told her last Christmas Eve he was going to ask her the last thing every night for a year before he’d give up. Saying no had been easy. Though meaning it was getting a little more difficult.

“Why not?”

“You know why not. I love you too much to subject you to a wedding.”

Cruz sighed. “Lame reason, chica. No one I know would think that’s a good reason.”

“They would if they remembered I’m an actress whose life attracts the press like a tub of honey attracts bees. And bees sting. You know what a zoo our wedding would turn out to be.”

“Not if we got married at the courthouse in Taos, or at your home there. People can get hitched the same day they get the license in New Mexico. I checked. We could keep it a secret.”

“A secret?  You know that’s impossible. Someone at the courthouse would tell their friend, who would call the newspaper or People Magazine or tweet it to thirty thousand of their closest friends.”

“Are you sure we’re still interesting to other people? I think the gossip about us has cooled down. People seem more interested in royal babies and the Jolie-Pitt clan now.”

“That’s true. There were only two camera crews outside the restaurant where we ate last Friday.” Molly’s brain reran a few snippets of the last two years, all recorded and available on the internet. Cruz struggling to recover from the motorcycle accident that nearly killed him. Her movie star husband leaving her for another woman. Her ex and the other woman having a baby.

Mother’s death.

All events which were played out on the front page of newspapers and websites around the world.

“Please? I’ll put a ring on it tomorrow if you say yes.”

Molly took a rattling breath. Tonight’s discussion was quite a bit more protracted than the three hundred plus nights before. “No, thank you. I don’t need you to do anything more to prove you love me.”

In the midnight shadows, his generous mouth softened against the hard curves of his face. “I do love you. I’ve always loved you. Every single moment since I met you. Even when we were apart.”

“Did you, Cruz? Did you really even love me then?”

He touched her nose with his finger and cleared his throat, which he always did when he recited a favorite poem.

“i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart) i  am never without it (anywhere I go you go, my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling) i fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)”

Molly’s eyes burned. “I melt when you recite love poetry, Professor Cruz. I hope you don’t do in class; all those cute girls will be trying to jump your bones.”

“I only recite for you, chica. I read e.e. cummings when I was recovering in the hospital. He brought you back to me.”

“Oh please,” she whispered. “Let’s not talk about those terrible times.”

“Why? They don’t matter now, they hardly mattered then. Once we got back together, I mean, the past was gone.”

“The past is never gone. It’s on Facebook and Entertainment Tonight.”

“No one looks at those things.”

That made her laugh, as he had hoped it would.

“Right. No one.” Molly embraced him, the sheets silky smooth, while Cruz was warm and hard, and then rolled onto her other side.

@GoddessFish Book Tour & Giveaway - Intensity by CC Koen @authorcckoen

The Deets...

What would you do to improve your life?

Twenty-one-year-old Serena Thomas is faced with a tough decision. Unable to get ahead of debt and loneliness since her grandmother’s death she finds a new job, placing the sheltered virgin in an underground escort business. She tells herself it’s just a temporary life choice, but destiny has a different plan. She meets a mysterious and gorgeous man, who happens to be her new boss. Will Serena fit in or will she be left all alone again?

Lincoln (aka: Linc) Jefferson has an unusual life. He established The Lounge, an exclusive escort club for very personal reasons. A place where the women say who, when, and what type of sex they’re willing to have. The escorts possess all the power and the money. It’s a business Linc guards at all costs. Trying to maintain the secrecy is a constant challenge and one that’s tested when he enters into a relationship with Serena. She tempts him unlike any woman, even though he’s surrounded by beauty on a daily basis. The more time they spend together the harder it is for him to keep his secrets. Will Serena stand by his side or will she abandon him?

Sparks and passion fly, taking these two on a journey neither could have expected.

A Sneak Peek Inside...

He yanked me up from my seat and launched his lips on mine so fast the contact zapped me with a thousand volts. His strokes, bold at first, lightened to soft, tender kisses almost as if he was asking permission to enter—to taste.

The heat from his hands, holding my upper arms, seared me.

My fists clenched and unclenched over and over at my sides.

Touch him? Don’t touch him?

Unable to deny myself, I moved closer, aligning my body with his. My hands gravitated of their own volition, melting to his tight abs and drifting upward, over his chest and up to his neck, where I held on for the ride.

His loud groan rumbled across my breasts, and his firm arms wound around my back, crushing me against him.

For the first time in my life, I surrendered and parted my lips, ready to welcome him in. Instead of tongues diving toward one another, Linc stilled and clamped his mouth shut. As I started to step away, he clenched my hips, holding me in place. He pressed his forehead to mine and slammed his eyes closed.

Kiss me, please.

@GoddessFish Book Tour - All of Me by Heatherly Bell

Guest Post by Heathery Bell

Hi everyone!
My name is Ivey Lancaster and I’m happy to be here today. I’m not exactly sure why I’m here or what I’m supposed to do, but when Heatherly asked if I’d dropped by— well, how could I say “no”?
By the way, I may have to run out of here quite suddenly because my Aunt Lucy has a broken leg. You would think she’s lost her leg the way she behaves. She can’t do the simplest of tasks, and I’ve been waiting on her since I got back into town. I’m a midwife by trade, but it’s in my nature to take care of people and fix things. So when Aunt Lucy asked me to come back to town and help her out for a few weeks, I couldn’t say “no”. All right, if I’m being honest it’s just hard for me to say “no” period.
That inability to say “no” to a certain man (my fiancé) got me into a bit of a jam a few years ago. Oh, everything’s okay now. Don’t worry! Well, all right maybe “okay” is overstating things a bit. Aunt Lucy thinks I should tell my ex-fiancé, Jeff Garner, why I left town so suddenly five years ago. Not that I think it’s any of her business what I do, but she has an opinion and I’m usually forced to hear it.
But I really don’t see the point.
You see, I recently went for an interview at the local hospital. They’re trying to bring a midwife program there, so that women in labor have more choice. I think it’s a great idea, but apparently some of the doctors disagree. So while I thought I had the job at the hospital, it turns out the medical director, Lillian, wants me to work with one of the residents to put together an informed opinion the Board can consider next month. No big deal, right?
It is for me. But as mentioned earlier, it’s hard to say “no” when someone needs me, and Lillian does need me. So before I realized what I’d done, my feet had followed her into a conference room to meet the resident I’d be working with. Imagine my shock when I walked into the room to find my ex-fiancé there, like he had every right! Seriously, how am I supposed to work with the man and pretend everything’s fine? You would think Aunt Lucy would have warned me he’d taken a position at the hospital in town, but no!
I didn’t say anything to Lillian then, but tomorrow morning bright and early I’m going to tell her that I can’t do it. It’s too hard to look at him. It hurts too much. He doesn’t know why I left, and that hurts even worse.
But I can’t work with him. Can I?

The Deets...

What would you do for a second chance with your first love?

Welcome to wine country and the small town of Starlight Hill, California, where the wine flows freely and so does the gossip.

The town has never quite forgiven Ivey Lancaster for leaving their favorite son, Dr. Jeff Garner, when she met a man on an online dating site. But the real truth of her absence is something Ivey doesn't want anyone to know.

When a sudden change of plans forces Ivey to work with her hunky ex, she must keep it professional or risk her heart all over again.

Sneak Peek inside...

Jeff sensed an opening and he proceeded to drive the proverbial Mac truck through it. “The best thing you and I can do is show everyone in town that we’re getting along. That we’re friends again.”

“Yeah. We better get the word out.”

He nodded. “Having dinner with me might help too.”

She whipped her head around so fast he worried about whiplash for a minute. “You and me? Not for real. That can’t happen. We’re not going there again.”

“Going where?” Yep, he was going to do this. Watch her walk right into his trap.

“Making love. Getting back together. Do I have spell it out for you?”

“Wow,” he said. “I’m flattered. But I was talking about dinner. You and your one-track mind.”

Suddenly, absolute quiet from the passenger seat. But as his luck would have it, not for long. “I caught you staring at my boobs. Don’t try to lie to me now.”

“I’m a man, Ivey, and right now you’re a wet-t-shirt-contest dream.”

“Don’t you dare stare at my boobs!”

He grinned. “Try and stop me.”

#

She turned to him, the light in her eyes that made him a goner. “We? Does that mean I’ve convinced you, Dr. Garner?”

He couldn’t help but grin. “Congratulations. I think we should make our recommendation that the board hire a staff of midwives and let them decide.”

She stared out the window. “I don’t know.”

@GoddessFish BookTour & Giveaway - Guest Post by @AndreaSimonne

What do you do when you're not writing?

When I’m not writing I’m usually traveling with my entourage. We like to hang out with rock stars and party on rooftops, guzzling expensive drinks. Not to brag too much, but it’s quite the glamorous life.

My entourage, also known as my two children (oops, they don’t like to be called children, even though—let’s face it—that’s what they are) demand a lot of time and attention. Luckily they’re both cute and funny, but don’t tell them I said that. It’s always good to keep your entourage guessing.

On our recent trip to a science museum we saw some unusual rocks that were shaped like stars. And let me tell you, I’ve never seen such crazy rock stars! They were worn out and rough around the edges, but still a colorful bunch. I could barely pull my eyes away. The oldest member of my entourage pretended indifference, but the younger member was impressed. We both agreed those were the wildest rock stars ever!

Afterwards, we went to a restaurant on the top floor and ordered fruit smoothies. I don’t know what kind of fruit they used, but those smoothies weren’t cheap. They tasted great though, and it was worth it to see the view from the rooftop as we guzzled our expensive drinks.

Now don’t be too envious, like I said, it’s a glamorous life.

Next week my entourage and I are planning to hang out with some cool supermodels. It’s going to be awesome. Apparently there are these dinosaur models on display and they’re super cool….

The Deets...

Choosing between two hot guys? Not a bad way to turn thirty-five….

Running into an old boyfriend is bad enough, but why does it always happen when you look your worst? Kate Alexander is wearing gray sweats, no makeup, and feels as glamorous as a pile of dirty laundry when she runs into her hunky ex, Ben Mathews. Ben is the only man who’s ever asked her to marry him. And now still single, and closing in on her thirty-fifth birthday, Kate suspects her shelf life is nearing its expiration date. Though Ben once broke her heart she’s convinced fate has brought them together for a second chance at love.

The problem is Declan O’Connor, a sexy Irishman. Kate considers him a friend—except she’s been having some very un-friend like thoughts about him. They shared a hot kiss one night, before Ben reentered her life, and now she can’t stop thinking about it. Despite the attraction with Ben, Kate is remembering her old resentments all too well. But then Ben asks her to marry him again, and her second chance has finally arrived. Is this what she really wants though?

From Seattle to Dublin, from the old to the new, Kate is caught between playing it safe or playing with fire.

A Sneak Peek Inside...

“I’m glad we’re together again,” he murmurs, kissing me softly. His fingertips trail down my body creating little sparks on my skin.

I’m still aware that we’re outside naked. Ben obviously doesn’t care though and I wonder if he sleeps out here a lot. It would be just like him. He’s like a dog that refuses to be kept indoors.

“What are you thinking about?” he asks, sensing my distraction.

“You. I was wondering if you sleep out here a lot.”

He chuckles softly. “I do. Crazy huh? Sleeping on my deck. You’re finding out all my secrets tonight. I love sleeping under the stars.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever slept under the stars.”

“Are you serious?” Ben looks shocked. “Never?”

“I was a Girl Scout when I was a kid and went camping with them once, but that’s the only time.” What I don’t add is that I hated it. All the bugs and dirt. It was awful.

“You were a Girl Scout? I’ll bet you were cute. But I can’t believe you haven’t gone camping since then.” He buries his face in my neck. “We’ll have to fix that. I’d love to go camping and sleep under the stars with you in my arms every night.”

“Sounds great.”

“Really?” He strokes my cheek. “Let’s do it. We’ll go when I get back from California.”

He kisses me slow and deliberate. I wrap myself around him, dizzy from wanting him again. The past fades away in a smoky haze and the present is bright and clear. There are stars overheard, and I have to admit, the view is beautiful. I decide that I’m even looking forward to going camping with Ben.

Sort of.

@GoddessFish Book Blast - The 13th Descent by Ky Lehman

The Deets...

ONE CHOICE CAN MAKE AN IMMORTAL HUMAN.

BUT WHAT CHOICES NEED TO BE MADE TO GO BACK AGAIN?

The revolutionary year following Serenay "Ren" Avalon's eighteenth birthday could rival Clark Kent's entire adolescence.

After her mother and her grandmother were killed in a car bomb explosion at the heart of their sleepy hillside town where nothing extraordinary usually happens, she discovers that her mother is actually alive and in hiding, her long lost father is a Father, and her best friend, who turns out was once an Archangel, has taken a gargantuan step back in his evolution to live on Earth with her for the past thirteen lifetimes. And besides being the only one in her immediate circle with a serious case of past life dementia, she learns that during her first lifetime, she was married to one of the greatest teachers history has ever known who is now the gorgeous lead singer of a hot new rock band taking the world by storm, and who is keen to meet up with her again in the twenty first century.

As Ren realizes that the powerful family name she bears also brings with it the promise of an unnatural death, she is reminded that it has always brought hope to people on both sides of the veil, human and Tor. As the world draws closer to being completely shrouded by the dark cloaks of her age-old enemies, the Bloodstones, she now, more than ever before, has to draw strength from her origins to protect her family and their ancient truth from this global force responsible for torturing and killing centuries of her ancestors.

As she struggles to unearth who she was, who she is, and who she chooses to be, as well as the expectations of her first mortal love and the heavenly love she has always guiltily denied, she has until midnight on the Solstice find a way to bring light to a compromised heart and to a world on the brink of perpetual darkness.

This first book in The Rosefire Trilogy by debut YA author, Ky Lehman, is a reminder of how the choices we make in the throes of love, loss, hope, and adversity are what makes the divine human, and the human divine.

A sneak peek inside

“Come on, Renay! You’re as slow as a wet week,” she snaps.

“Right behind you,” I grumble, trying to coax my jelly legs to step out of the car.

She bustles us inside and disarms her house alarm. She grabs my hand, leads me straight to the navy blue comfy couch and gestures for me to sit. “Drink?” she asks.

“No, thanks.”

She goes to the kitchen and gets me a tall glass of water anyway.

Then everything goes from strange to downright bizarre when she sits down, squishes in next to me, puts her arm around my shoulders and rests her cheek on my hair. I am wedged in-between her and the armrest: I couldn’t move if I tried, and I honestly don’t want to. Hugs from my one and only aunt are like sunny days in the winter. They are rare. They are warm. They smell of cream and cinnamon. They go by too quickly. And you know you’ll have to wait a while for the next one.

“Look at me, Renay,” she gently commands. Bleary eyed, she carefully scans my face and sighs.

It seems she is already regretting what she is yet to say. A chill of forewarning forces a shiver: it sets my heart pounding and my legs that have finally regained feeling start to twitch and shake, preparing to run. She senses my panic and holds me tighter, and starts to softly hum a familiar tune that Nanna must have used to calm her down too. Slowly, the dread resides and the warmth returns. My stiff posture thaws allowing me to slump into her side. Realising she has been given the green light, she takes a deep breath and starts talking.

Aunt Romey has never been one to beat around the bush. Simple English. No fluff. The bare facts followed by her opinion of them. But this time, the candour I usually appreciate brings with it a realisation that hits me so hard, that, for the first time since the bomb went off, I am relieved the undercooked takeout chicken kept me home that night.

Bedtime stories that once lulled me into sweet dreams now leave me feeling cold, heavy and sick.

Horrifying truth gives a voice to the intoxicated mutterings of a grieving husband and father.

Nanna’s fairy tales.

Georgie Pa’s drunken rants.

All of the frayed strands and loose ends I’ve obliviously left hanging tangle and weave into the blood stained tapestry that is Aunt Romey’s history lesson.

Three versions of the same unfathomable story, each with its own conclusion. The fairy tale ends in hope.

The drunken rant ends in fear.

And the history lesson will only end with the death of the Three Roses, who my newfound enemies believe are Nanna, Mum and me.

Surrounded by the ghosts of our ancestors and their vindicating screams, I cling to the only olive branch within reach.

Mum may be on the run, but she is alive and well.

But the sinewy little branch is not strong enough to bear the weight of centuries of lost life. It snaps, and I limply fall into large, familiar, bloodstained hands that carry me off into the black quiet.
