 Let's Move On

by Deborah Nam-Krane
Series: The New Pioneers
Release date: September 29th, 2014

Zainab has spent years keeping Emily from going over the edge, giving Miranda a shoulder to cry on and nursing Jessie back to health. They'll be the first to agree that she she deserves whatever makes her happy, especially after the drama Richard put her through. But did she have to choose the guy who threw everyone's lives into the shredder?
Richard knows he screwed up and he'd do anything to get Zainab back- but first he needs to make sure his company -and his loyal employees- don't go under. (Who knew kicking your primary investor to the curb would have consequences?) Good thing his family has such deep pockets; too bad he doesn't want to take a cent from them. Why should Zainab take him back if he can't get out of his own way?
Maybe Zainab can eat her cake and have it too- that is, until she's given an ultimatum. The choice isn't Lover A or B; it's protecting her friends or letting them fend for themselves. With that hanging over her head, what's it going to take to make sure she and everyone else can finally move on?

Worth the Trade by Kristina Mathews @KristinaMathews & @goddessfish promotions

The Deets

A ballplayer and a team owner would give anything for a championship—even their hearts…

After inheriting majority ownership of the San Francisco Goliaths baseball team, Hunter Collins wants to prove to herself—and the rest of the league—that she’s got what it takes to build a champion. Her first move is to trade for a hot left-fielder. He’s got it all, speed, power, and a desire to win. Not to mention undeniable charm.

Marco Santiago is tired of being the new player in town. After four teams in six years, he’s facing free agency at the end of the season. He wants nothing more than a long-term contract and a World Series win. Hitting on his new owner probably isn’t the best way to get it, but love may be the most powerful challenger either of them has ever faced...

Warning: Strong language, consummated love scenes, and some baseball clichés.
“Smart, fun, and sexy. A great romance read.” –New York Times Bestselling Author, Kat Martin

What does a creative writer do when they're not creatively writing... Kristina?

What do I do when I’m not writing? The easy answer is that I’m hardly ever not writing, thinking about writing, or feeling guilty for not writing. Or I may be on Facebook, Goodreads, Twitter, or blogging about my books, my writing life, or baseball.

I spend a lot of time watching or listening to baseball. I now get to call it research. I even go to other teams’ games such as the Triple A Sacramento River Cats or Reno Aces games, just because I love the sport. I even went to an Oakland A’s game on the last weekend before my oldest son went back to school because my Giants were playing in New York.

My family likes to spend time enjoying the outdoor recreation that is so close to home. We live an hour from Tahoe, three hours from the Pacific Ocean. We’ve even driven to Yosemite National Park for the day.
One of the activities we’ve gotten back into is whitewater rafting. My husband was a guide back in high school and college and we now own two boats that are ancient, but still manage to get us down the river with only a few patches and duct tape. We do have to bail after the big rapids, but that’s the way they did it back in the day. There are some tactical advantages to not having an inflated bottom, but I leave the technical stuff to my husband.

On a recent trip with my family, we were having a great time until I fell out of the boat on a particularly large (and usually fun) rapid. In twenty-five years I’d never taken an unintentional swim. He always grabbed me just in time. Not this time. I fell out, shocked and sputtering, but I managed to hold on to my paddle. Instinct had me try to swim for the boat, but we were moving too fast. He was yelling at me to turn around. So I did. I kept my feet downstream as I bobbed over the rapid. But I forgot to keep my bum up.

I smacked my bottom into a rock. Granite is a very hard surface, especially when it comes up unexpectedly. I knew I was going to have a rather pretty bruise. Once I got back into the boat, I found that the tubes were not very comfortable to sit on. Especially when the boys were playing the trust game in which they stood up on the edge of the raft, paddles intertwined, and seeing how long they could lean back before falling off. There was a lot of bouncing going on, and it was almost like getting hit in the backside every time they jolted the boat.

The next day I realized it wasn’t so much the bruise on my bottom, but my tailbone that was hurt. Walking, sitting, getting up and down was painful. I don’t know if my tailbone was fractured or merely bruised. I never went to the doctor because there’s not much they could do about it.

Ten days later, I had to fly to San Antonio for the annual Romance Writers of America conference. It wasn’t so bad going out, I got bumped up to first class and the seat was roomy enough that I could lean on one side or the other or sit on my neck pillow.

I managed to get through the first couple of days on adrenaline. It’s a great pain reliever to be so excited and nervous about meeting my publicist and fellow authors, having my first book signing (other than friends and family) and just being surrounded by people who are just like me. I busted my tail to get there, literally, and I wasn’t going to let a bum bum keep me from making the most of it.

A sneak peek inside Worth the Trade?

“I’m only interested in winning the division and making a strong run in the postseason.” She turned her head to look out the window as if to show she was unaffected by the chemistry between them.

“Aren’t you a rotten liar?” He chuckled softly. Oh yeah, he was definitely getting to her. “Don’t join in the poker game at the next owners’ retreat. You’ll be wiped out.”

She whipped her head around so fast the car shook. “I happen to be a very good poker player. I can hold my own against anyone. Anytime.”

Interesting. Her strong reaction told him two things. She was insecure about her place among her fellow owners. And yes, she was interested in him on more than a professional level.

“That explains your wardrobe.” He leaned back, not ready to leave her just yet. “You dress like you do to fit in with the old boys’ club. But you can’t hide the fact that you are all woman.”

“And you can’t hide the fact that you don’t want to be here.” She dared look him straight in the eye, but couldn’t hold his gaze.

“I’m starting to come around.” He gave her one last smile.

Kristina lives in Northern California with her husband of twenty years, two sons and a black lab. A veteran road tripper, amateur renovator and sports fanatic. She hopes to one day travel all 3,073 miles of Highway 50 from Sacramento, CA to Ocean City, MD, replace her carpet with hardwood floors and serve as a “Ball Dudette” for the San Francisco Giants.

TV Done Right Blog Hop

You know it's so long since I actually got into anything anyone is watching on TV. So long in fact that I've just cancelled my satellite subscription, so I've really found the posts on what is great about TV when it's done right by CarolineIsabellaDeb and Danielle super interesting.

When I think about the things that TV gets right, I think about British Soap of the Year 2014 Hollyoaks. I'm not sure if my international readers have had the pleasure of watching Hollyoaks yet, but I've said for many years that this soap never receives the recognition it deserves, ever since a group of Hollyoaks hunks went pot holing and their van went over a cliff. It's the details that the writers and cast of Hollyoaks go to that really make you stop and think and the lack of recognition is very possibly because its aimed at the younger generation and deals with issues teens and young adults face every day.

Centered around the student orientated Hollyoaks village near Chester it has a mixture of characters and story lines and there are the usual soap dramas who's sleeping with who? Who's the daddy? Which bad guy is gonna get one up on the other bad guy? there's often a serial killer storyline and also, the classic and comedic underdog stories. They have the right balance of drama, comedy, romance and entertainment and although I'm far from the typical soap addict, I mean which writer has the time to religiously watch a soap five nights a week, I still keep up.

But Hollyoaks has brought to our attention some pretty scary real life issues. It's dealt with abusive relationships both gay and heterosexual, drug addictions, death - lots of deaths - and also illness. Longest serving female character Stephanie Dean, at around twenty-six, suffered with terminal cervical cancer and yes, she did die. But not the way you might think. She saved the lives of a young mother and her two babies from a fire and never made it out herself.

There's also mental illness following the epic Sienna Blake storyline who playing the psycho nanny turned Darren and the rest of the Osborne family against his wife Nancy and she ended up in a mental health ward while Sienna "helped" with their three kids, eventually leading to Nancy and Darren's divorce and Sienna's fake pregnancy and her engagement to Darren. And currently, Cindy Cunningham is slowly losing herself to bi-polar following the traumatic and pre mature birth of her very sick son.

It's tackled the unmissable account of Hannah Ashworth's battle with anorexia, an early storyline included self harming and Lisa Hunter's friends thought she was being abused by her father, as well as racial bullying which eventually lead to Asian school girl Anita Roy attempting to bleach her with domestic house bleach, and social media safety when India Longford fell for twenty something guy online, whom she arranged to meet, and was never seen alive again. Her killer, a creepy granddad then went on to terrorise the girls of Hollyoaks village for the next ten months, before he killed his own daughter by mistake and set his sights on a heavily pregnant Mercedes McQueen, abducting her and holding her hostage on her wedding day.

Currently, two of their most poignant story lines at the moment are the rape of teacher John Paul McQueen by school student Finn O'Conner and a domestic violence storyline which is running along side a national awareness campaign here in the UK and like every difficult story tackled by Hollyoaks these have been given the dignity and the respect they deserve.

Maxine Minniver (above), who began life in Hollyoaks like most female cast members - gorgeous enough to be a lad's mag pin up - started dating the evil headmaster Patrick Blake and over time Maxine went from a typical young woman dressed age appropriately, to Patrick's conservatively dressed
fiancée. This particular storyline has been going for at least twelve months with the change happening gradually until it was hard not to notice the abuse. I remember Maxine dressing as a Christmas elf a Patrick throwing almighty fit, telling her she'd embarrassed him and she couldn't dress like that because he was now the laughing stock of the school, no big deal right? Hollyoaks has shown with this storyline that you couldn't be more wrong.

The great thing, and possibly one of the worst things, about Hollyoaks is that no one is safe in Hollyoaks village, every member of the cast, loved or loathed, are at risk of meeting the grim reaper, weddings are particularly dangerous especially for the bride or groom. Louise, Texas, Max, Doug, and good cop gone bad Calvin, all died on their wedding day and, as I said, Mercedes was abducted and locked in a basement for days, she even went into labour down there, but was rescued just in time by her fiance. Just when you think someone has their happy ever after BANG!

And on that note I leave you with the graceful bow out of Max Cunningham, who was also the longest service male cast member at the time. Kleenex at the ready.

Don't forget to join Deb Nam-Krane tomorrow!  (25th August 2014)

The Honeymoon Prize by Melissa McClone @GoddessFish Promotions

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Melissa will award a $25 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn winner via the rafflecopter at the end of this post during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

NOTE: This book is on sale for only $0.99 during the tour.  Why not grab yourself a copy today?

He needs a wife...

Single bodyguard Nick Calhoun has been given an ultimatum by his boss--find a wife or lose his cushy, high-paying job. Clients' wives are hitting on him and putting Nick, and his boss, in hot water. But monogamy? He's never been a white picket fence kind of guy, and he's not about to embrace the happily married lifestyle now. He needs a wife who doesn't care about his steamy, extra-curricular love life...and he knows just the woman to fit the bill.

She needs a home...

Adalaide Sinclair spent years caring for her ill grandmother. Upon Grammy's death, she's stunned to find herself evicted from the only home she's ever known and labeled a thief by her inheritance-hungry family. Addie needs to find a place to live and a job--fast. So when her childhood friend, Nick, proposes a no-sex marriage of convenience, she puts her dreams of true love and happily-ever-after on hold. Finding Prince Charming can wait a little longer, right?

But will their friendship survive the honeymoon?

When Nick and Addie unexpectedly win a dream honeymoon, they decide to go their separate ways during the ten-day vacation. Too bad a camera crew is waiting for them at the tropical paradise. Acting like a head-over-heels bride and groom for reality TV wreaks havoc on their no-sex agreement...and blurs the line between fantasy and reality. Will Nick and Addie remain married in name only, or will a romantic honeymoon for show turn them into true newlyweds?

Enjoy an excerpt:

The breeze off San Diego Bay ruffled the hem of Adalaide Sinclair’s borrowed white dress. She stood at the wedding arbor in the County Administration Center’s Waterfront Park, holding a single yellow rose, her pulse racing faster than a F/A-18 taking off from Miramar.

Don’t lock your knees. Passing out during the lunchtime ceremony would be a total wedding faux pas. Not what she needed when she felt like a complete fraud, fake, liar. Her stomach churned, trying to wash away the guilt.

Clicks sounded—photographs being taken by her friend Emily Rodgers. The digital images weren’t fun shots to be shared via Instagram, but pictures to place in a fancy white album, a remembrance of the wedding day.

Air rushed from Addie’s lungs. Breathe. But less and less oxygen seemed to go into her lungs. Uh-oh.

Do. Not. Lose. It.

Nick Cahill, a close friend since kindergarten, stood next to her. The wind blew the ends of his wavy light brown hair, making him look like a model. He wore black trousers, a slightly wrinkled white dress shirt and a black bowtie. He looked so handsome and very groom-like. Well, of course, he did, given he was the groom.

Her groom.

He’d been her best bud until middle school, an intermittent crush through high school and her platonic male BFF since then. She never thought she’d be adding “her groom” to the list.

Addie’s forehead throbbed. Her heart ached. A lump burned in her throat.

I can’t believe this is happening.

With a degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, Melissa McClone worked for a major airline where she traveled the globe and met her husband. Since then, she has published over thirty romance novels with Harlequin and Tule Publishing Group. She’s also been nominated for Romance Writers of America’s RITA® award. Share the Moon By Sharon Struth

Today, I welcome back Sharon Struth. I reviewed Hourglass by Sharon last year and found it an utterly charming read, and so I'm very happy to feature her work again.

The Deets...

Sometimes trust is the toughest lesson to learn.

Sophie Shaw is days away from signing a contract that will fulfill her dream of owning a vineyard. For her, it’s a chance to restart her life and put past tragedies to rest. But Duncan Jamieson’s counter offer blows hers out to sea.

Duncan still finds Sophie as appealing as he had during boyhood vacations to the lake. Older and wiser now, he has his own reasons for wanting the land. His offer, however, hinges on a zoning change approval.

Bribery rumors threaten the deal and make Sophie wary of Duncan, yet she cannot deny his appeal. When her journalistic research uncovers a Jamieson family secret, trust becomes the hardest lesson for them both.

"Heart-tugging small town romance with real emotion. Struth is an author to watch!"
—Laura Drake, author of RITA-award winning The Sweet Spot

"Superb… throw in a hunky dad, a small town and a savvy heroine who gets the job done and you've got me hooked!"
—Rachel Brimble, author of A Man like Him

A Sneak Peek inside Share the Moon

Thud!

Air whooshed from Sophie’s lungs. Pain coursed through her shoulder blades, neck, and spine. The ground’s chilly dampness seeped into her cotton khaki pants, raising goose bumps on her skin. Seconds passed without breath before she managed to swallow a gulp.

Lying flat on her back, she stared at the cornflower blue sky and spotted a chalky slice of the moon. The night Henry died, a similar crescent had hung from the heavens, barely visible nestled among the glittering stars. She prepared for the scrape that threatened to tear the gouge of her scarred heart. Seven years. Seven painful years. She closed her eyes and after a few seconds, the weight of sadness lifted off her chest.
Tears gathered along her lower lashes. She pushed a strand of unruly long hair from her face. Footsteps crunched on the ice pellets and headed her way.

“Matthew Shaw…” Fury pooled in her jaw as she resisted the urge to yell at her
son. “You’d better have a good excuse for taking so long.”

A man with cinnamon hair, short on the sides with gentle waves on top, knelt at her side. She studied the strong outline of his cheeks and the slight bump on the bridge of his angular nose that gave him a rugged touch, but he wasn’t familiar.

“Are you okay?” He searched her face.

The stranger hovered above. Tall treetops, clinging to the last of their earth-toned foliage, served as a backdrop to her view. A vertical crease separated his sandy brows.
She couldn’t pry herself from his vivid blue eyes, in part stunned from the fall, but also by her first responder.

@Goddessfish - Luck of the Draw by Cheri Allen

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Cheri will be awarding a $25 Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift card to a randomly drawn winner and a $15 Amazon or Barnes and Noble gift card to another randomly drawn winner via the rafflecopter at the end of this post.

If only life had a refresh button...

Kate Mitchell never planned to be a 31 year-old widowed single mom, but when her soon-to-be-EX husband up and dies, her dreams of finishing college and starting over are thrown in the air like a game of 52 pick-up. When she’s given a leave of absence from work and told to “quit or recommit,” Kate retreats to idyllic Sugar Falls, New Hampshire, to figure out whether she can discover her passion and pay the bills. Cue the fresh air, summer sunshine and one sexy local contractor.

Tall, dark, and handy…

Volunteer fireman and all-around hunky guy in a toolbelt, Jim Pearson has sworn off complicated women with messy baggage. They cling to his nice-guy stability and skills with a power saw just long enough to straighten out their lives and move on… but then he meets the cute single mom staying at Grams’ lake house for the summer.

While a sizzling attraction draws them together, Jim's distrust of complicated women and Kate's incredibly complicated life threaten to pull them apart. But forces beyond their control--match-making grandmothers, the lazy backdrop of summer, and their own reckoning with the past--conspire to make them risk it all... and bet on love.

Now enjoy and excerpt:

She could hear their breathing in the quiet room, the air a bit close from the heat of the day. She smiled.

He grimaced.

“Kate, I—”

She put her finger to his lips. “Please, don’t. I know this must seem crazy. We hardly know each other, but… I don’t want to analyze it. Not now.”

She didn’t want to talk. Didn’t want to admit her behavior was so far removed from her usual comfort zone it was like observing someone else. But Jim made her feel safe in a way she couldn’t put her finger on. Safe… and alive. No, that wasn’t right. He made her feel… hopeful. There was something about his eyes. So gentle, so kind. When she looked into his eyes, all the sad, lonely years melted away, and her heart felt light again, like a butterfly in her breast. She hadn’t felt that feeling in so very, very long. She couldn’t bear to turn it away. Not now. Not yet.

He nodded, his gaze boring into hers as he grasped her hand and pressed a kiss to her palm. His thumb brushed over her fingers as he looked at her hand. “You took off your ring,” he whispered.

She nodded, and he brought her hand to his lips again, looked her in the eyes. “Tell me what you want,” he said.

“For you to,” she managed a shaky breath, “do that again?”

He grinned against her wrist…

@GoddessFish Promotion: Stolen Dreams by @ChristineAmsden

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Christine will be awarding a $100 Amazon gift card to a randomly drawn winner via the rafflecopter at the end of this post.

Edward Scot and Victor Blackwood have despised one another for nearly a quarter of a century, but now their simmering hatred is about to erupt.

When Cassie Scot returns home from her sojourn in Pennsylvania, she finds that her family has taken a hostage. Desperate to end the fighting before someone dies, Cassie seeks help from local seer Abigail Hastings, Evan Blackwood’s grandmother. But Abigail has seen her own death, and when it comes at the hand of Cassie’s father, Victor Blackwood kills Edward Scot.

But things may not be precisely as they appear.

Evan persuades Cassie to help him learn the truth, teaming them up once again in their darkest hour. New revelations about Evan and his family make it difficult for Cassie to cling to a shield of anger, but can Evan and Cassie stop a feud that has taken on a life of its own? Conclusion to the Cassie Scot series.

Now enjoy an excerpt:

I escaped from Alexander DuPris the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, only to be told by my family that I was being melodramatic. And this right on the heels of informing me that we had a hostage in the guest bedroom.

A hostage, you say? Surely now I’m being melodramatic! But no, Juliana used her healing gift to knock Amanda Lee unconscious, then shoved her in a supply closet until Dad picked her up from school, at which point the two of them moved the body into the backseat of his car.

“Are you crazy?” I asked. I looked from face to face, trying to find a trace of sanity, but they were all doing their normal after-dinner things exactly as if nothing were wrong. Mom, hugely pregnant with twins, crocheted an afghan, Nicolas was out with Madison, Juliana looked entirely too pleased with herself, Isaac played a video game, Elena hid behind a book, and Adam and Christina played in their rooms. It could have been any normal Tuesday evening, except for the hostage upstairs.

“Cassandra,” my father said, “you haven’t been around. You don’t understand.”

Of course I didn’t understand. No one had told me that things were getting this bad. It was as if I’d been on the moon for the past two months instead of in Pennsylvania, calling home three times a week. But oh, everything is fine at home. Just fine. Don’t worry about us. How are you doing? When will you be home?
